Our accredited Functional Skills English course gives you the essential, practical skills in English that you can apply at work, at home or in your community by developing your reading, writing, speaking, listening and communication skills. You will gain confidence in using English in everyday life and work situations such as:
• Supporting with your children's English homework
• Writing persuasive letters and reports
• Being creative and writing stories and poems
• Being confident in public speaking and delivering presentations
• Identifying relevant information from pieces of text
• Meeting employer needs to support employment or progression in work
• You will develop your English skills in spelling, punctuation, reading and writing skills as well as speaking, listening and communication by taking part in discussions or giving a presentation.
• Be able to read for information and correctly identify key points of text.
• Improve your listening skills and how to respond to others effective.
• How to write for a variety of purposes, e.g., to persuade, to inform or to describe.
• Construct a written text, e.g., a personal statement, formal letter. Using a range of language techniques and wider vocabulary.
Your tutor will work with you to set your own individual learning goals that will support you to complete your course and help you progress onto the next steps that are right for you.

This course is delivered in person at Ely Library. You will need to attend all scheduled sessions and complete additional learning in your own time as directed by your tutor. You will also be required to complete all the required assessments at one of our test locations around Cambridgeshire.

All equipment needed for this course will be provided in the lesson, however access to a computer device at home will enhance your learning but is not essential. We may be able to support you with loaning this equipment if you do not have it.
You will achieve a City and Guilds Functional Skills English that will enhance your CV and is recognised by employers, as well as helping you progress to Further Education.

Prior to starting the course, you will be required to complete an initial assessment and meet with your tutor. This will help us understand your current starting point and allow us to tailor the course to meet your specific needs.
