This course is designed for learners who wish to develop and consolidate their digital and IT skills in preparation for work, further learning or everyday life. The qualification focuses on practical skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, alongside career progression-related digital competencies. It is ideal for those wanting to demonstrate capability in using key software packages to a competent standard and to support progression into employment or further study.
You will gain practical experience and knowledge in the following areas:
• Microsoft Word
- Creating and formatting a variety of business documents such as letters, reports and tables.
- Using features such as spell check, page layout settings, headers and footers, and inserting images.
- Employing tools for proofreading, editing and collaborating on documents.
• Microsoft Excel
- Entering and editing data, formatting cells and using basic formulae and functions.
- Creating charts to represent numerical data visually.
- Sorting and filtering data and applying simple data validation.
• Microsoft PowerPoint
- Creating effective presentations with formatted slides, bullet points, and visual elements.
- Inserting and editing images, charts and hyperlinks.
- Applying slide transitions and animations for professional delivery.
• Digital Skills for Career Progression
- Exploring how digital skills relate to employability and career development.
- Understanding digital communication methods, online safety, and managing digital presence.
- Creating or improving a digital CV and engaging with digital job search platforms.

How will I attend this course?
Depending on which avenue you choose, online and face to face will be delivered on set days and times by a tutor. You will need to attend all the scheduled sessions for the full course duration and complete additional learning and assignment in your own time as directed by your tutor. To achieve the qualification, you will need to create a portfolio of evidence. The start and end date will be advertised.
For flexible, you will need to commit to engaging with the course materials for approximately 4+ hours per week independantly, as well as attending tutor support sessions. The flexible course duration is typically around 9–12 months but can be shorter depending on your pace of study. To achieve the qualification, you will need to create a portfolio of evidence.

For face to face sessions we will provide you with all the equipment you will need during the session.
For online provision, you will need:
- A laptop or PC with internet access.
- A camera and microphone for participating in online sessions.
- Access to Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- We may be able to support you with hardware if required.
You will achieve the Gateway Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Digital and IT Skills, a nationally recognised qualification valued by employers and training providers alike. It supports progression into digital-related employment and further Level 3 study.
