Stepping Stones is a face to face accredited parenting programme for parents or caregivers of a child with an additional need (up to 12 years) They may have concerns about their child’s moderate to severe behavioural difficulties.
It is aimed at families of children with a range of developmental disabilities, such as:
- Intellectual disability
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Cerebral palsy
- Elevated levels of disruptive behaviour
Trained facilitators provide parents with face-to-face group support in managing their child’s behaviour across various settings.
Participants will have the opportunity to network, gaining support from their peers. The focus is on understanding problematic behaviour and teaching the child skills they can use to replace misbehaviour.
During focussed one-to-one sessions, parents will:
- Set their own goals
- Work out what changes they would like to see in their child’s behaviour
- Learn strategies to promote positive behaviour and effectively deal with misbehaviour; and begin to demonstrate they can sustain these changes.
